The history of SumiDurez Singapore Pte Ltd can be dated to 1973. At its inception, the company was named Hooker Chemical Far East (Singapore) Pte Ltd. It traded in products made from its parent company in the U.S.A.. In 1981, the company built its own production plant in Jurong Industrial Park. The objective was to produce premium quality phenolic moulding compounds for Singapore and the Far East markets. Following a worldwide restructuring by the the parent company a short while later, the company was renamed Occidental Chemical Pte Ltd.
In 1989, through a joint venture with Sumitomo Bakelite Company, Limited of Japan, the company became SumiDurez Singapore Pte Ltd. This is the first 50:50 US-Japanese joint venture in a newly industrialised country. In October 2000, the company became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sumitomo Bakelite Company Limited, which is also its ultimate holding company.

Driven by a zeal to ensure continuous improvement in the conduct of its business, SumiDurez embarked on an Environmental Management System in early 1997 and this culminated in the attainment of the esteemed ISO 14001 award in September 1998.
